November 29 2017: New SCC Justice Sheilah Martin – Power Play intvu

In late November, Justin Trudeau announced his pick to replace Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin – not as Chief Justice, but as the ninth judge on the Court.  Ignoring a fever pitch of speculation about the possibility that he would, for the first time, appoint an Indigenous person (and indeed, anyone who is not white), the Prime Minister instead picked Alberta Court of Appeal judge Sheilah Martin.  A talented scholar, advocate and jurist, Martin is one of if not the best nominee to the Court in many years.  I talked about her remarkable accomplishments (full disclosure: Martin and I worked on some LEAF cases back in the 1990s) with Don Martin.
